Food Safety Summit Partners with Association of Food & Drug Officials; Offering Five AFDO Members Scholarships to Attend
DEERFIELD, IL, February 11, 2013- The Food Safety Summit is proud to be partnering with the Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) for the 2013 event. Following the 2012 keynote presentation of then AFDO President Oscar Garrison, the Food Safety Summit made a commitment to support AFDO members and offer scholarships to attend what Mr. Garrison, Division Director, Consumer Protection, Georgia Dept. of Agriculture called the "most important food safety event of the year". BNP Media, owners of the Summit are pleased to be supporting five AFDO members who may not otherwise have the chance to attend this event due to travel constraints. The three-day conference and trade show, now in its 15th year and will take place at the Baltimore Convention Center, April 30 - May 2, 2013.
"The Summit and AFDO believe that the future of food safety for the entire food industry hinges on the immediate need for industry to collaborate with regulators in a much greater and transparent way," said Scott Wolters, Director, Food Safety Summit. "We were thrilled that both AFDO Executive Director Joe Corby and Past President Oscar Garrison are featured speakers at the Summit this year."
Immediately following Mr. Garrison's remarks during the 2012 Summit Scott Wolters announced the launch the Food Safety Summit AFDO Scholarship program in honor of Oscar Garrison's presentation. "Your commitment to the advancement of food and drug officials' through continuing education and to the Summit is unmatched and for the 2013 event we will be selecting five food and drug officials from all over the country to be our guests at this event. We will cover their registration for the Summit and provide a stipend for their travel to Baltimore." The five AFDO members who will be awarded the 2013 scholarship are: <
- Joe Corby, Executive Director, AFDO
- Claudia Coles, Food Safety Program Manager, Washington Department of Agriculture
- David Read, Assistant Director, Minnesota Department of Agriculture
- Stephen Stich, Director, New York Department of Agriculture & Markets
- Steve Moris, Manager, Kansas Department of Agriculture
In addition to attending, Joe Corby will speak on two panels. He will join FDA, Deputy Commissioner for Foods, Mike Taylor and USDA Under Secretary for Food Safety, Elizabeth Hagen at the 2nd Annual Food Safety Summit Town Hall to discuss and answer questions about the most pressing issues of today and tomorrow in regards to regulatory agencies and the private sector. Mr. Corby will be joined by speakers from the FDA, the White House and food safety leaders from Canada, Mexico and Europe.
"With food safety regulators, I'm not sure there has been a more exciting period in our lifetime to advance the efforts for improving food safety. AFDO's vision 14 years ago for a fully integrated food safety system was considered impractical by many and yet today we are on the verge of advancing such a system that we believe can and will dramatically improve the safety of our food supply," said Joseph Corby, Executive Director, Association of Food & Drug Officials. "AFDO is looking forward to participating in this year's Food Safety Summit and bringing members of our executive team to this important industry event."
Oscar Garrison, Division Director, Consumer Protection, Georgia Department of Agriculture and Past President of AFDO will lead a half day workshop on Industry, Local and State Food and Drug Officials - How They Can Effectively Work Together. During this session attendees will hear from leading regulators in an open and honest discussion on surveillance, regulation, and inspection as well as alliances being developed as part of FSMA rules. Mr. Garrison will also lead a session on Understanding Regulatory Community and the Partnership for Food Protection. Attendees will find out the status of current ongoing activities including efforts to standardize training and expertise levels of inspectors and the effort to develop national standards for federal, state, and local laboratories.
